Wed, 28 Jul 2010 03:55:45 -0700 Tight title battle continues at Brands http://www.superleagueformula.com//News-Media/News-archive/Tight-title-battle-continues-at-Brands
Craig Dolby and local London club Tottenham Hotspur had been untouchable at the top of the standings throughout the first five rounds. But an accident at Zolder coupled with another strong weekend for Yelmer Buurman last time out has helped AC Milan establish an eight point championship lead.

You might assume that Brands Hatch would suit Dolby and fellow British drivers Duncan Tappy (Flamengo) and James Walker (Liverpool), who should have raced at the Kent venue during their domestic junior formula careers. But for two of them at least, the seldom-used high-speed 2.613 mile, nine-turn Grand Prix circuit is a venture into the unknown.

Indeed, it’s Buurman who will hold all the aces when it comes to track-knowledge this weekend thanks to the Dutchman’s two seasons spent in the UK.

“I'm really looking forward to it.” said Buurman. “I know the circuit from my time in Formula 3 and think it's a good track, particularly through the fast corners.”

For his part, Dolby doesn’t expect a lack of experience to trouble him.

“We came back stronger at Zolder and have a good car again,” he said. “We’ll work on it and try a few new things in practice so hopefully we’ll be very competitive. I’ve never raced the full Grand Prix loop here but then I hadn’t raced the GP circuit at Silverstone either (where he won twice) so that won’t be a problem. The plan is to get the championship lead back again. I’d love all three wins.”

Tappy meanwhile has his sights firmly set on making the Super Final after scoring a podium on his championship return at Zolder.

“I’d like to make the Super final which is everyone’s goal and certainly mine for the weekend,” he said. “That or a podium at the very least. I’ve raced half the track which is at least better than some of the circuits I’ve been to this year, so it should be fine. There are just a few more corners that we need to have a look at.”

Aside from championship contenders RSC Anderlecht and Olympiacos, who both scored victories at the last round in Belgium, there’s also a number of less-fancied clubs who should perform well this weekend.

John Martin (Beijing Guoan) and Narain Karthikeyan (PSV Eindhoven) are something of Brands Hatch specialists. The Australian won on debut in British Formula Ford before setting fastest lap of last season’s A1GP meeting, while the Indian was on pole there, also in A1GP, two years ago.

“I really like this place and have a lot of experience here,” confirmed Martin. “The first race I ever did in the UK was at Brands Hatch in Formula Ford with an Aussie car we brought over and ended up winning on debut. The whole circuit is great. There’s no slow corners and it really rewards total commitment, which you can see in the lap times.”

Catch all the action from both 45-minute feature races, as well as the top-six, five-lap Super Final, live on www.superleagueformula.com, Sunday August 1.

For free broadcast-standard video supporting Superleague Formula championship news, please visit www.thenewsmarket.com/SuperleagueFormula. The 18-turn, 3.751km FIA Grade 2 race track is due to be completed in July and Superleague Formula will be the first international series to visit on 2/3 October.

Ordos will be a two-day event and feature Superleague Formula’s unique Group Stage / Knockout Qualifying format on the Saturday, followed on Sunday by two 45-minute races, the second of which includes a fully-reversed grid, and a six-car, five-lap Super Final where a 100,000 Euros prize is up for grabs for the winner.

Ordos, translated from Mongolian as ‘palaces’, is one of China’s wealthiest regions. The city itself is a prosperous mining area where its population of roughly two million people enjoys a GDP per capita of about 20,000 Euros. That’s higher than the mainland’s average and is expected to surpass Hong Kong's by 2014.

The area is also extremely rich in natural resources and harbors one sixth of China’s coal reserves. The pillars of its economy are textile (wool), coal mining, petrochemicals, electricity generation and production of building materials.

In just six years, the local authority has spent a substantial 1.942 billion Euros transforming the area into a stunning postmodern metropolis with spaceship-like government towers, Dubai-style skyscrapers, museums, libraries, theatres, sculpture squares and luxury bungalows.

Visiting Ordos this autumn marks the championship’s first foray outside of Europe since its inception in 2008. In a competitive market saturated with single seater series, growing gradually and sustainably has remained Superleague Formula’s priority. The line of goalkeeper, defence and attack must then each work together moving sideways back and forwards in an effort to score.

That was the theory anyway. In reality, the racing drivers’ ultra-competitive spirit took over with the trio spending more time flailing around on the floor than playing anything remotely comparable to the Beautiful Game.

A tight first match saw Superleague Formula race into a three-goal lead before MSV hit back to level the scores. But the circuit owners’ First V couldn’t maintain their momentum in the second half, eventually slumping to a 5-3 defeat.

Unmoved, MSV hit back in the second match with some style, routing the opposition 6-2 to set up a tense decider.

The final best-of-three encounter was a cagey affair with both goalkeepers particularly impressive at either end, Tappy proving more adept at keeping balls out of his net than he had at putting them away!

Craig Dolby, Tottenham: “That was crazy and really good fun! It combines the motorsport and football side really well. We ended up falling on the floor most of the time, at one point me and Duncan were on the ground more than on our feet! But it was a good laugh and something to look forward to again in the future, especially if we can involve the fans. It would be a great way for the fans to take on the drivers. Having said that, I was shocking! Give me a steering wheel any day.”

Duncan Tappy, Flamengo: “Personally I think I was man of the match; scored two and was confident in my performance! It’s been a good crack and all part of the Superleague Formula experience. You don’t get this in any other championship and we should definitely do more of it.”

John Martin, Beijing Guoan: “I was alright, I’m just not very good at football! I definitely think the skills need to be improved so I’ll have to work on that. I’m not going to give up my day job, that’s for sure! I played a bit at school when I was about ten and that was about it. I wasn’t very good then either, as I remember!”

Superleague Formula’s seventh round of the season comes from Brands Hatch on July 31 and August 1.
Fri, 23 Jul 2010 10:19:55 -0700 Countdown to Neste Oil Rally Finland http://www.wrc.com/jsp/index.jsp?lnk=101&id=8368 Make no mistake - this is the one event every rally driver dreams of winning... Another win at the Nurburgring, coupled with Dolby’s relatively poor weekend, slashed the gap in half to 30 points before Zolder last time out.

But it’s no longer just Buurman who has his sights set on making season three’s championship his own, with a trio of other drivers within just 60 points of the lead.

They’re headed by former champion Davide Rigon, who will be full of confidence travelling to Brands having notched up Belgian side RSC Anderlecht’s second Super Final triumph of the year on home soil at Zolder.

Next up is Max Wissel (FC Basel), the only man to have qualified for all six Super Finals held so far in 2010. That he’s only scored one victory suggests it’s consistency that has kept the young German in the hunt, but his blistering turn of speed is undoubtedly there when it counts.

But it’s Chris van der Drift and Olympiacos who are perhaps causing the biggest stir. The New Zealander is the only man to have netted four wins, including one at Zolder, in what’s been an astonishing debut season to date.

And he’ll again expect to be in the hunt around Brands Hatch’s fast Grand Prix configuration where no less than 106 points are on offer should one man manage what’s so far proved impossible; the weekend hat-trick.

One thing’s for sure though; there’s bound to be no shortage of excitement when the world’s most open single seater series hits the track for the second half of 2010.
Tue, 20 Jul 2010 05:41:33 -0700 Sports stars out in force at Zolder http://www.superleagueformula.com//News-Media/News-archive/Sports-stars-out-in-force-at-Zolder
Fresh from winning a 30th league title, Ondrej Mazuch, Lukas Marecek, Jan Lecjaks and Roland Juhasz were also joined by Funso Ojo and Stijn Wuytens of Dutch giants PSV Eindhoven whose home ground is just an hour away from Zolder.

All six men took the chance to wander round the paddock and soak up the atmosphere out on the grid ahead of both 45-minute feature races.

And it was Anderlecht who were again left celebrating after Rigon finished second in race one before pouncing at the first corner of the Super Final to pick up the €100,000 prize money for victory.

Meanwhile, Flying Dutchman Yelmer Buurman, who finished runner-up in the series with PSV in 2008 and fourth for Anderlecht in ’09, took the championship lead from long-time leader Craig Dolby courtesy of 4th and 5th places.

Stars of Dutch motorsport were also out in force with double Indy 500 champion Arie Luyendyk joining Le Mans 24 Hours winner Jan Lammers for a spot of Superleague Formula VIP hospitality.
Tue, 20 Jul 2010 03:11:23 -0700 Read BBC weatherman's Hungaroring forecast http://www.bbc.co.uk/go/rss/-/blogs/weather/ianfergusson/2010/07/formula-one-weather-forecast-h.shtml Mon, 19 Jul 2010 09:12:50 -0700 Home win for RSC Anderlecht in Zolder Super Final http://www.superleagueformula.com//News-Media/News-archive/Home-win-for-RSC-Anderlecht-in-Zolder-Super-Final
The Italian grabbed the €100,000 prize from the five-lap dash-for-the-cash, completing a fine weekend which also saw him take second and ninth place finishes in the two 45-minute feature races to boost his championship hopes.

Rigon’s Super Final triumph was sealed in the first corner on the opening lap as he dived down the inside of pole sitter Chris van der Drift (Olympiacos) and then held the New Zealander at bay for the remainder of the race.

Van der Drift’s second place remains provisional as the stewards investigate him overshooting his grid slot before the start.

Julien Jousse guided the AS Roma car to third ahead of Tristan Gommendy (Galatasaray), Yelmer Buurman (AC Milan) and FC Basel (Max Wissel).

However the big news is that Tottenham Hotspur and the London club’s driver Craig Dolby have lost their place at the top of the league table to Buurman and AC Milan after the Brit was taken out in race 2 and failed to score any points.

That action-packed second race saw Jousse bounce back from a disastrous start to his weekend to take the win.

Gearbox problems had plagued the French driver in practice, qualifying and race 1, but his team solved the issue and Jousse drove faultlessly to win by more than ten seconds.

The key to Jousse’s victory came during the pitstop window as he opted to make his compulsory stop one lap later than Duncan Tappy (Flamengo), who had led the first 15 minutes of the race from pole. The AS Roma car rejoined the track just ahead of Tappy and although the Brit made a dive down the inside at the next turn, he put two wheels on the grass and the chance was gone, despite him brilliantly holding the resulting slide.

Tappy spent much of the remainder of the race looking in his mirrors as Alvaro Parente (FC Porto) closed in, but he had managed to ease out a comfortable margin when the Portuguese driver retired with suspected system pressure failure with just a few minutes remaining.

Parente’s misfortune promoted Gommendy to the podium places, the Frenchman surviving a wheel-banging moment with Maria de Villota (Atletico Madrid) early on and then holding off a determined challenge by Wissel, who came home fourth.

Buurman was fifth ahead of Andy Soucek (Sporting Lisbon), while John Martin (Beijing Guoan) nursed his car home in seventh after suffering a problem which saw him struggle for pace after the pit stops and lose several places.

The remainder of the top ten was made up of race 1 winner van der Drift, Anderlecht’s Rigon and series debutant Jaap van Lagen (Bordeaux).

Perhaps the most crucial moment of the race came right at the start as Dolby was the innocent victim of a tangle between James Walker (Liverpool) and Marcos Martinez (Sevilla).

Walker’s touch from behind on the Spaniard’s car sent Martinez lurching into Dolby’s, with the Brit losing his front wing, which folded under his car sending him tobogganing into the wall and retirement. The chaos wasn’t over yet though as Martinez, who didn’t know he’d lost his rear wing in the collision, headed towards turn 1 at full speed and slid straight into Robert Doornbos’ Corinthians car, pitching the Dutch driver into a barrel roll through the gravel trap. Thankfully he was unhurt in the incident.

Buurman’s fifth place, coupled with his points from the Super Final, means that Dolby and Spurs have lost the championship lead they’ve held since the opening round at Silverstone in April, with AC Milan now eight points ahead at the top of the table.

Superleague Formula resumes on 31 July – 1 August with round 7 at Brands Hatch.

Davide Rigon, RSC Anderlecht: “We were fast in both the feature races and then I made a fantastic start to the Super Final to get into the lead at the first corner. It’s been a great weekend for me, the team and of course Anderlecht and I’d like to say thank you to everyone. For the next round, I don’t really know Brands Hatch at all other than it’s a difficult circuit and that it will be important to learn the track in practice and find a good set-up. But I don’t think that will be a problem.”

Chris van der Drift, Olympiacos: “I was too cautious into the first corner of the Super Final and Davide was straight up the inside. We’ve been the fastest two cars all weekend, so I didn’t have a chance to pass him. I’m happy to have scored a lot of points for Olympiacos though, because that was the goal. I’m now looking ahead to the next round because I really like Brands Hatch and I have raced there before.”

Julien Jousse, AS Roma: “We had a very difficult start to the weekend. We had problems with the gearbox in practice, qualifying and race 1 but it was much better in the second race and I’m really happy with the win. For the Super Final I didn’t have any new tyres left, while both Davide and Chris did, so third was the best I could do.”
Sun, 18 Jul 2010 07:13:08 -0700 Priaulx claims second Brands victory http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/85365 Andy Priaulx scored his fourth win of the World Touring Car season in Sunday's second race at Brands Hatch Sun, 18 Jul 2010 07:06:25 -0700 Muller heads Huff in Chevrolet 1-2 http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/85358 Yvan Muller led Rob Huff home as Chevrolet dominated Sunday's first World Touring Car race at Brands Hatch Sun, 18 Jul 2010 04:56:06 -0700 Van der Drift wins race 1 for Olympiacos http://www.superleagueformula.com//News-Media/News-archive/Van-der-Drift-wins-race-1-for-Olympiacos
The New Zealander, who has taken back-to-back Super Final wins for the Greek club in the last two rounds, led from pole position on his way to victory in the weekend’s first 45-minute event, producing a mature display which saw him keep his cool despite being pushed hard by Davide Rigon of home favourites RSC Anderlecht.

After making a strong getaway from pole position, van der Drift maintained a lead of around 1.5 seconds during his first stint before making his compulsory pit stop a lap after the pit window opened 15 minutes into the race.

After the stops, Rigon closed van der Drift’s advantage to nothing, but the 24-year-old kept his nerve and withstood the pressure, before pulling away to a 1.8 second victory.

Rigon collected a strong points haul for second place, while Robert Doornbos (Corinthians) scored his first podium of the season after jumping Max Wissel (FC Basel) at the start.

Doornbos was almost denied his top-three finish by the hard-charging Yelmer Buurman (AC Milan), who started seventh, jumped James Walker (Liverpool) and Wissel at the stops and then passed Craig Dolby (Tottenham Hotspur) with a superb move into the Gilles Villeneuve chicane. He was right on the tail of Doornbos with ten minutes remaining, but a downshift issue saw him run off the track and drop too far behind the former F1 driver to make a challenge for the podium.

Series leader Dolby limited his losses in the league table by finishing fifth, while Walker pinched sixth from Wissel after the latter locked up while making a move on the Spurs car ahead.

Marcos Martinez finished eighth for Sevilla ahead of series returnee Andy Soucek (Sporting Lisbon), while Narain Karthikeyan (PSV Eindhoven) completed the top ten.

The only retirement came towards the end of the race when the clutch on Duncan Tappy’s Flamengo car exploded, but he can console himself with pole position for the fully-reversed grid race 2.

Chris van der Drift, Olympiacos: “It’s good to turn the pole into a win. When you start at the front half the work is done and you just have to get the second part sorted. It’s a fantastic result and we’ve scored good points. The Atletico Madrid car blocked me a bit at the end while I was lapping it, so I was a little worried that Davide would catch me, but I had kept a couple of push to passes just in case.”

Davide Rigon, RSC Anderlecht: “It was very close and I was a little bit faster than Chris but I was losing some time behind him in the fast corners and it wasn’t possible to overtake. It is very hard to pass here so that will make things tough for race 2.”

Robert Doornbos, Corinthians: “I can’t believe I am so happy with a podium! It’s been a long time since I was up there and I’ve missed it. This one is for the boys in the team. We had a terrible start to the season but we turned a corner at the Nurburgring so now it’s time to get some good results.”

For free broadcast-standard video supporting Superleague Formula championship news, please visit www.thenewsmarket.com/SuperleagueFormula. He then defeated the in-form Yelmer Buurman (AC Milan) in the last eight before accounting for the rapid Max Wissel (FC Basel) in the semis, a contest he led in each sector.

The other Semi-Final saw Rigon get past Robert Doornbos (Corinthians) when the Dutch driver, who set the fastest time of anyone in the Group Stages, made a mistake in turn 1 and couldn’t recover his one tenth of a second disadvantage by the end of the lap.

Wissel will start third and Doornbos fourth in tomorrow’s first race.

The Quarter Finals also proved to be exciting affairs, particularly the match-ups between championship leader Craig Dolby (Tottenham Hostpur) and third place Wissel and that between the drivers in second and fifth places, Buurman and van der Drift.

Wissel put Dolby out in a ding-dong battle which saw the German lead in the first sector and the Brit go ahead in sector two before Wissel crossed the line just 0.152 seconds quicker after Dolby made a small mistake at the hairpin.

Van der Drift advanced ahead of Buurman despite losing 0.237 seconds in the first sector alone. He was still trailing in S2, but sneaked through by 0.048 after a storming final part of the lap.

The other two QFs saw fairly comfortably wins for Rigon over Liverpool’s James Walker and Doornbos over Marcos Martinez (Sevilla), his time of 1:18.657 being the fastest of the entire qualifying phase.

The results mean English Premier League clubs Liverpool and Tottenham will share the third row tomorrow, with AC Milan and Sevilla on row four.

Earlier, a yellow flag towards the end of Group A’s session caught a number of drivers out as they were unable to improve their times.

The flag flew when Duncan Tappy, who was just a tenth shy of making the top four, spun his Flamengo car at Bolderbergbocht while trying to improve his time and became beached in the gravel. That left series returnee Andy Soucek (Sporting Lisbon), Julien Jousse (AS Roma), Tristan Gommendy (Galatasaray) and Maria de Villota (Atletico Madrid) all outside the cut-off zone with no opportunity to set another flying lap.

Group B also ended with a car in the gravel as Superleague Formula debutant Jaap van Lagen spun off at Kanaalbocht after an encouraging first competitive outing in the Bordeaux car. The Dutch driver could still be pleased to set the sixth best time in the group and he was certainly happier than Beijing Guoan’s John Martin, who felt he was baulked by PSV Eindhoven on his first flying lap and missed out on a quarter final spot by just one tenth.

FC Porto’s Alvaro Parente, race 2 winner at the Nurburgring last time out, also went out in Group B as he failed to recover from the mechanical problems he suffered in practice and was the only driver not to break the one minute 20 seconds barrier.

Race 1 takes place on Sunday at 11:30am local time and can be watched online at www.superleagueformula.com

Chris Van der Drift (Olympiacos): “Finally we’ve got our pole position! This is really great for the team and starting from the front always makes things easier on race day. I got faster and faster in the knockout stages as I pushed more and found better lines. The plan for tomorrow is for a first feature race win. We want to get some good points to climb further up the league table and after that the Super Final is just a bonus.”

Davide Rigon (RSC Anderlecht): “It’s fantastic to be on the front row in Anderlecht’s home race. The car is good, a bit better than in free practice, and I am sure we will be fast in the races. I’m very happy and looking forward to tomorrow as it’s a chance to close the gap to the teams at the top of the table, but it will be important not to make any mistakes.”

Max Wissel (FC Basel): “My lap against Craig (Dolby) in the Quarter Final was quite good, but it wasn’t as good in the semis against Chris (van der Drift). I had a little problem with understeer and made a mistake in the second sector, which ruined it for me as I’m normally quicker than Chris there and then he’s faster in S3. Third is ok though and I’ve been quick here before. It will be even better if it rains tomorrow, although I don’t think it is forecast!”

Robert Doornbos (Corinthians): “I messed it up at turn 1 in my semi final and that sometimes happens when you’re pushing. It’s a bit frustrating because we had a pole position car today and I was faster than anyone. But the big prizes come tomorrow and I’ll try to make a better start than I did at the Nurburgring as we’re hoping for our first podium.”

For free broadcast-standard video supporting Superleague Formula championship news, please visit www.thenewsmarket.com/SuperleagueFormula. Tue, 13 Jul 2010 15:22:00 -0700 Old-school Zolder set to test Superleague Formula’s best http://www.superleagueformula.com//News-Media/News-archive/Old-school-Zolder-set-to-test-Superleague-Formula-s-best
The 2.492 mile, 10 turn circuit has remained a staple of the championship since its inception in 2008. Indeed, it is the only venue to have been included on the calendar throughout Superleague Formula’s brief history to date.

There’s every chance of local fans cheering on a home victory too with RSC Anderlecht and Azerti, the outfit that run them, flying high in the championship. Their driver, 2008 champion Davide Rigon, has been quietly clocking up points for the Purple and Whites so far, including two wins at Assen and four further podium finishes, to lie fourth in table.

And the Italian will be amongst the favourites again this weekend after tasting victory at Zolder back in 2008.

“I have good memories of Zolder, because in 2008 I got an important victory which proved decisive for the final championship result,” said Rigon. “The circuit is of an old-style that’s typical of an era in which the tracks proved really challenging for drivers. At first it seems quite simple to learn, but that’s not the case. It is very technical, with elevation changes that makes it difficult to pick your braking points.

“Zolder will be very important for me because it’s the home race for my club, RSC Anderlecht, and also for my team, Azerti. The company is located just a few miles from the circuit.”

It’s also a place where Tottenham Hotspur’s Craig Dolby is hoping to re-affirm his position at the top of the league standings after Yelmer Buurman’s AC Milan slashed his advantage by 30 points at the Nurburgring last time out.

The Englishman knows Zolder well from his time spent in Belgian junior formulae and took his first Superleague Formula victory there last season.

“I personally love the place and think it’s wicked!” he said. “With a Superleague Formula car it’s very exciting, especially over the hill and into the woods; an unbelievable place to be. It’s fast in places but in others quite slow.

“It’s a very technical circuit which if you get right can really reward you. Everyone will be fairly quick around the first two-thirds but there’s a knack to getting the final sector right, so it’ll be very interesting.”

Another to look out for will be FC Basel’s Max Wissel who is something of a Zolder specialist. The German’s Superleague Formula CV includes two fourths, a fifth and an eighth place finish at the track, despite the championship’s fully reversed second race grid concept.

The action starts on Friday with two 40-minute free practice sessions ahead of Saturday’s qualifying at 1425 local time. The first of Sunday’s three races begins at 1130 with the second at 1400 and the Super Final set to follow straight after.

Don’t forget you can catch all the qualifying and race action live on the Superleague Formula website this Saturday and Sunday.
Tue, 13 Jul 2010 01:12:19 -0700 DAKAR: Volkswagen newsletter 2010-07-11 http://www.motorsport.com/news/article.asp?ID=377188 Dakar Rally 2011 Volkswagen enters Race Touareg 3 in the Dakar Rally 2011 New shell, proven core: Volkswagen develops an evolution model of the Race Touareg for the Dakar Rally 2011 in South America. But since then he’s failed to taste victory champagne again, although consistent podium finishes had kept him comfortably clear of the chasing pack until Nurburgring last time out.

There, chief title rivals AC Milan became the first team to scoop two feature race wins this season after victory in France, allowing the team’s Dutch master Yelmer Buurman to halve Dolby’s advantage to 30 points after an off-weekend for the Spurs star.

Indeed, Buurman’s outright pace suggests that Tottenham will be looking over their shoulder for the remainder of the season, with a further trio of clubs all within 100 points of topping the league.

That might sound like a lot but with 106 on offer per weekend, just one poor performance could blow the title race wide open.

One such team looking to profit will be home-favourites RSC Anderlecht, who lay fourth going into the Zolder weekend. Italian driver Davide Rigon knows a thing or two about Superleague Formula, having won the championship in its inaugural 2008 season. After a partial campaign last term, he returned reinvigorated at the start of 2010 to score a double victory at Assen, while further podiums and consistent points finishes have kept him well and truly in the title chase.

Max Wissel’s FC Basel have proven quick everywhere this season to stand third, while Olympiacos’ Chris van der Drift is perhaps the series’ most in-form driver having stood on the top step of the last two Super Finals. Despite scooping €200,000 for his trouble, the Dutch-New Zealander will be desperate to recapture his feature race-winning pace last seen at Assen.

But with this season’s ten feature races producing nine different winners, it’s difficult to predict who will triumph in Belgium.
Thu, 08 Jul 2010 02:38:25 -0700 Bueno to join Chevrolet for Brands http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/85043 Chevrolet will field a fourth Cruze at next weekend's Brands Hatch round for triple Brazilian touring car champion Caca Bueno Wed, 07 Jul 2010 06:30:54 -0700 DAKAR: Volkswagen develops Race Touareg 3 http://www.motorsport.com/news/article.asp?ID=376344 New design, proven technology: Volkswagen is developing an evolution model of the Race Touareg that has been victorious twice in a row for the 2011 Dakar Rally in South America. Franck Perera suffered disappointment in the Flamengo car as he failed to get away from the grid with a suspected clutch problem.

Earlier in race 2, Alvaro Parente claimed victory for FC Porto after holding off a late-race challenge from Bordeaux’s Franck Montagny.

Parente led right from the start after both he and Montagny got past pole-sitter John Martin (Beijing Guoan FC) at the first corner. The Portuguese driver’s lead was up to 2.7 seconds as Montagny pitted for his compulsory stop and the Porto car rejoined from its stop two laps later ahead of the Frenchman, although a stunning lap from Montagny had closed the gap to less than a second.

Parente’s lead stabilised at one second in the second half of the race and even though Montagny narrowed that advantage again in the closing stages, he ultimately settled for the runners-up spot.

Gommendy netted his first podium of the season for Galatasaray in third, passing Atletico Madrid’s Maria de Villota on lap 2 and then jumping two places in the pit stops.

De Villota, Superleague Formula’s only female driver, produced her finest performance of the season to claim fourth, holding off strong pressure from Tottenham Hotspur’s Craig Dolby in the early stages, and then comfortably bringing the car home just outside the podium places.

FC Basel climbed from 11th to fifth, Wissel passing Dolby for the place with ten minutes to go thanks to a fine move down the inside of the Spurs man at the final corner.

Dolby struggled in the second half of the race, but ensured he kept his championship lead by taking strong points for sixth, although it wasn’t enough to make it through to the Super Final, while Borja Garcia was seventh for Sporting Lisbon.

Race 1 winner Buurman climbed from the very back of the grid to finish eighth in the AC Milan car, while Perera and Robert Doornbos (Corinthians) completed the top ten.

There was more woe for Sebastien Bourdais in the Olympique Lyonnais car as he retired from third with a gearbox problem, while Martin’s nightmare weekend also continued as he dropped through the field from pole and ultimately retired.

Reigning champions Liverpool were also left ruing their luck as James Walker pulled into the pits after the parade lap with a compressor failure and retired soon after as the team couldn’t find a way to fix the problem.

Chris van der Drift, Olympiacos: “I can’t believe it to be honest. It’s a great reward for the team. I made a fantastic start to the Super Final. I just dropped the clutch and went straight through the middle of them, in fact I wish all the races were standing starts as I really like them! Anderlecht was quite quick, but I was just able to pull away and cruise home really. We go to Zolder looking for more of the same really.”

Davide Rigon, RSC Anderlecht: “My start to the Super Final was fantastic and I was close to Olympiacos in the first corner. Then, I was pushing on the limit and he still was pulling away so I decided to make sure I got second as Yelmer was quite far behind. We weren’t so quick in race 2, I don’t know why, maybe the aero or the tyres. For sure I’m thinking about the championship and looking forward to Zolder, where I won in 2008, and I hope to have a good race for all the Anderlecht fans at their home track.”

Yelmer Buurman, AC Milan: “It’s been a good weekend but I have to say a huge thank you to the guys on the team as we had to change our clutch between races 1 and 2 and they worked flat out to get it done. We’ve taken some points out of Tottenham and we’ll see what happens now in the next few rounds. We’ve been quick everywhere this season and I see no reason why we can’t be in Zolder too.”
Sun, 27 Jun 2010 07:13:30 -0700 AC Milan boost title hopes with race 1 win at the “Ring” http://www.superleagueformula.com//News-Media/News-archive/AC-Milan-boost-title-hopes-with-race-1-win-at-the-Ring
Buurman became the first driver this season to win three races as he jumped from fourth into the lead by the first corner and then managed his advantage to RSC Anderlecht’s Davide Rigon for the remainder of the 45-minute race.

The rolling start was a little messy and worked out badly for front row duo Julien Jousse (AS Roma) and Robert Doornbos (Corinthians) who were immediately passed by Buurman and Rigon.

While Buurman eked out a small lead in the opening laps, Rigon pegged the advantage to around 2.3 seconds as the pit window opened. The Anderlecht car came in first, with Milan following a lap later.

As the stops shook out, Rigon had narrowed Buurman’s lead, but the Dutch driver was never seriously threatened by his Italian rival and pulled away to a 7.7secs victory at the chequered flag.

Some way behind the front two, Chris van der Drift scored his third consecutive race 1 podium with another fine drive for Greek club Olympiacos. The Superleague Formula rookie held his starting position of fifth in the early laps but jumped Flamengo and AS Roma in the pit stops.

Franck Perera was fourth for Flamengo, just a couple of seconds adrift of Olympiacos and well clear of a five-car scrap for fifth led by Jousse. After his bad start from pole, the AS Roma driver lost two more places during the pit window and then couldn’t repeat his qualifying pace in the second half of the race as a chain of cars formed behind him. However, the Frenchman defended superbly to take fifth, despite several passing attempts from Liverpool’s James Walker, who ended sixth, and Doornbos, who was seventh.

Title contender FC Basel was also in the train behind Jousse, Max Wissel having set the race’s fastest lap as he tried to recover from his poor qualifying. The German rewarded his team, who had changed his car’s engine since Saturday, with eighth.

Just behind was Tristan Gommendy for Galatasaray in ninth. The Frenchman lost a stack of places after being pushed wide at turn 1 on the first lap and spent the rest of the race fighting back through the field.

Completing the top ten was league leaders Tottenham Hotspur, for whom Craig Dolby salvaged a handful of points after starting last following yesterday’s nightmare qualifying session.

Elsewhere, Sebastien Bourdais had another tough race for Olympique Lyonnais. Bourdais had a massive sideways moment on the grass at the Schumacher S on the first lap and, after dropping to the back of the field, couldn’t fight his way back any higher than 14th.

Alvaro Parente (FC Porto) and Franck Montagny (Bordeaux) both saw their chances of strong points disappear with problems during their pit stops, while last weekend’s race 1 winner John Martin (Beijing Guoan) didn’t even start the race as he pulled off on the parade lap with right rear wheel failure.

Yelmer Buurman, AC Milan: “I managed to overtake Robert (Doornbos) at the start and that left me on the inside line into turn 1 and I was able to stay there. I pulled out a gap, but it got close again after the pit stops because I accidently switched on the pit lane speed limiter at the wrong time. But after that everything was fine and it was a great race for me. It’s a good result for the championship, but Craig (Dolby – Tottenham Hotspur) will be further up the field in race 2 and I’ll be at the back. You can overtake here though so that’s what I hope to do.”

Davide Rigon, RSC Anderlecht: “It was quite an uneventful race for me! I pushed a lot in the first half hour, but congratulations to Yelmer as he was just too fast, so in the end I started to save the tyres and the car for the next race. I’ll start at the back for the next race now, but it’s important to score points and the car is not too bad so we’ll see.”

Chris van der Drift, Olympiacos: “It’s a good points haul, that’s for sure. The start was a little bit messy, Yelmer came right down the middle and I got stuck in behind Rigon. We had a stable pace that was very consistent, but we weren’t electric off the start. The pit stops turned out really well and we had a good race to the end. Top ten would be good in the second, and making the Super Final is the overall goal.”

For free broadcast-standard video supporting Superleague Formula championship news, please visit www.thenewsmarket.com/SuperleagueFormula.
